The Herons sits by the shore, at the Keiss edge of Sinclair's Bay, within a two acre partly-fenced garden, flanked shore side by historical WWII tank defences. The cottage has panoramic views across Sinclair's Bay towards Noss Head Lighthouse. The Herons has direct access to the rocky beach with its myriad of little rock pools at low tide, and a short stroll will take you to the 3-mile-long sandy beach between Keiss and Reiss, with Castles to explore at either end of the bay. Sea birds and mammals are frequently reported in the area, with orca, minke and humpback whales being seen off the coast and seals in the bay. Given its name, The Herons, you might glimpse a few herons fishing on the shore.
Approximately 17 miles from the most northerly point of Scotland, Dunnet Head, the cottage is a perfect base for exploring Caithness and venturing further afield to Orkney and the west coast. The Flow Country with an RSPB Reserve at Forsinard is within easy reach, as well as Castletown where you can glean something of the history of the local flagstone industry.
The archaeology of Caithness is one of its hidden gems. Castle Sinclair Girnigoe and Old Keiss Castle, Camster Cairns, Loch of Yarrows, Standing Stones at Achavanich, to name a few. There are several Brochs in the area, with the Caithness Broch Centre at Aukengill, just along the road.
At certain times of the year, the Northern Lights will blow you away if you stay up late enough.
This spacious cottage sleeps 7. The garden, laid to lawn, is enclosed at the front by a wall and to the side and rear by stock fencing.
Ground floor: Living room with solid fuel stove; kitchen/dining room; games room with 10ft American Pool Table; utility room and toilet.
Upstairs: Master bedroom with 5ft bed, dressing room and ensuite shower room; triple room with 5ft bed and single bed; and twin bedroom. Bathroom with shower over the bath.
The cottage uses oil fired heating and a solid-fuel stove, with all solid fuel and all oil included. The shower in the ensuite is run from the hot water heating system and the shower in the bathroom is electrically powered. There is an immersion heater switch in the kitchen for hot water, if you do not need the heating when we have our beautiful Scottish summers.
All bed linen and towels are provided, including tea towels. Please supply your own linen for the travel cot.
The cottage has a TV and DVD player in the sitting room, a TV and DVD player in the master bedroom, (both TVs have Freeview). There is a small library of DVDs. Free unlimited Wifi. Electric ceramic hob with 4 rings, double oven, microwave, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.
A starter pack is provided: coffee, tea, sugar, initial toilet rolls, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, washing machine tablets, dishwasher tablets, washing up cloth, scourer and sponge and oven glove.
There is a local pub/restaurant in Keiss, Sinclair Bay Hotel, within one mile walk from the cottage, along the shore and up the path to the village. Supermarkets are Tesco, which will deliver if booked in advance, the Co-op behind the station on the road to Thurso and Lidl on the south road into Wick.
The Herons is a non-smoking cottage.

A non-refundable deposit of £100 per reservation is required on booking. The balance is payable no later than 6 weeks prior to your arrival. Should you require to cancel thereafter, no refund of balance will be given, unless re-booked. We recommend you have your own holiday insurance in place for such situations. When the balance is received, you will be forwarded details about arrival procedures.
Arrival should be after 4.00pm on your date of arrival and you must vacate the cottage by 10.00am on your departure date.
We welcome pets. Maximum 3 dogs. The cottage is situated on the shore with farmland to the rear. Dogs must be kept under strict control at all times near livestock. Please contact us in advance of booking regarding other pets. In the interests of all guests, we would appreciate if pets are restricted to the ground floor and not allowed on beds or soft furnishings.
